Iíve been experimenting with filling large, lightweight card aircraft with expanding foam, this creates a strong, light structure which can be hollowed if necessary, I havenít got to the point of a flying model yet. What do you all think of this idea?

I bet you will have to watch how much foam you put in. Too much would cause exploding....

I've been considering experimenting with the expanding foam too. It would really beef up the fuselage strength. Big Tom is right though, I'm sure it would be a real talent knowing how much to spray. I'll have to try it out on some of the test build models I have laying around.

Thanks for the positive response, I havenít had any problems with the model exploding since the foam expands when it is still in a liquid state, it does start to erupt out of the hole I put the foam in. The main annoyance is that the foam sets in the valve on the can, so Iím building a few large models before my next filling session to avoid wasting a can of pretty expensive foam just for a small model.

You can buy the expanding foam in two parts just like epoxy glues. That way you can mix only what you need. Try looking at some of the Remote Control airccraft site or modeling suppliers such as Tower Hobbies. I think that Aircraft Spruce and Supply also sells it but in gallon jugs which can be reclosed after use. And since it is in 2 parts you don't have to worry about clogged nozzels. Only problem would be getting it into the model where you want it.

Great Idea. I'm going to build the large Minimoa Glider and try it as a slope soarer, and this just might be the answer. The only other problem that hasn't been mentioned is the foam may warp some of the parts if not cautious.
