one more positive note for this printer......water does not cause the ink to run or smear....once it has dried, it is fairly water resistant..... :D :D

I bought a Lexmark inkjet that uses #28/29 cartridges. Since November, I have used about twenty carts. - they avg. about $18.00 ea. There's no aftermarket cheap refills because Lexmark (along with some of the other Manufacturer's) have put a little chip in ea. cart. that allows them to work. Non-proprietory carts. won't work. The printer was under $50 but @ the cost of the carts. and only getting 100 to 120 copies before it's time to buy more, I could have bought a laser printer.
I went to Staples to buy another set of carts. and the manager of the store told me that it's a bait & switch set-up on the inkjet printers - they're cheap, but if you do any volume of printing, they nail ya on the back side with the cost of cartridges.
She said the cartridges for the laser printers are more expensive, but they will print a 1000 or more pages before replacement is required. She told me to look around and I would be able to find a laser printer on sale that would fit my needs - didn't try to sell me one of her's on the spot - I respected that. I'm going to cut my losses and switch to laser.

I bought me a Konica Minokta laser about 2 years ago for $300.
for $100, you can get a cartridge that will print 10,000 pages.

4 cartridges is about $400, but you're looking at about 10,000 1 page models printed.

The printer cane with 2500 sheet cartridges loaded, and I am just now needing to replace one of them.

What ever you get, make sure it makes the colors nice and bright. The color laser here at school washes everything out. I believe it's a Dell. I've printed a few models out on it, but I'm not impressed.

That manager was right, this is exactly how the printer manufacturers make their money - not from the printers themselves, but from the consumables associated with them. They either force you to buy their (extortionately priced) own brand cartridges by chipping them, or try to frighten you into buying them with scare stories about how third party cartridges will somehow 'damage' the printer, when in actual fact they work at least as well or sometimes better than the originals. It's a scandal, really.

I'm using an HP4200 all in one and spent around $80.00 for it and have had no problems with print quality it seems to print out the models just fine. I feel it was a real good buy.

Jzman,

Thanks for the reply. How much are the carts & how many copies do you get before you have to change them?

I never counted, but they last about a month. Take into account on the estimate, three people using it two of whom are in college and printing out massive documents, along with the models. so for one person and just light documents and models cartridges might last longer. The price on those cartridges are around 30 to 40 dollars for two cartridges.

By the way I love HP products, never had a problem with them. The last printer I purchased from HP lasted me over 5 years before it gave me any problems.

Anyone out there know anything a HP DeskJet 820Cse. Is it a good printer for card models :?: I,ve had this one for several years with no problem. I get reman cartridges form print pal, Black & Color Cart. for less than $30 after 10% discount. I've had some problems with color mainly from PP.(I think) They always replace them at no cost. I think the colors are OK :? however I have nothing to compare them with except the ones you all post here and on other places? The new cartridges seem to last 2 or 3 months. I've never really counted how many documents or card models I do in that time :?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew, is it a good printer for card models :?:

I use a DeskJet 932C and it is excellent for card stock and the ink cartridges last a real long time.
