Now that definitely brings back some memories!

It's weird actually, because I was just thinking the other day about when I joined the forum and mentioned that I was more used to building balsa stick and tissue models; you replied that you'd just started. I suddenly began to wonder recently how you were getting on or if you were even still doing them.

It looks like you've made a great start on the Bird Dog :D. I never did build any of the 900 series models, although I started on the Mustang kit you've got there. I didn't get around to finishing it though. I found the wood for the ribs etc to be thinner than the stringer wood (1/20 inch compared to 1/16 inch) which required an awful lot of sanding to get them level. I tried this on the tail but it just kept breaking, so I put the kit to one side intending to come back to it at a later date, but never did .

Please feel free to ask for any advice on covering or whatever and I'll be happy to help, you know I will. It has been well over a year since I last built a balsa kit, though, so I may be a little rusty! Good work so far though willy, keep it up :D.

I hope to finish the other wing and tail here shortly. I may have to run out and get a couple strips of balsa though. I accidently broke one of the pieces and now I'm going to be a bit short. oops! I'll let you know when I get to the skinning part. The whole dope thing makes me nervous. The instructions seem easy enough, but I'm a bit worried. The first one I built was the Hellcat that you made. I didn't cover it because I used it at school to teach students how aircraft frames look and function. It seemed to work.

Willie & CD,
When I was a kid [looong time ago  ] I lived about 6 miles from the Guillow factory [actually a collection of one story wooden buildings]. Therefore, I have built most of the simpler models in their series. Along with Comet, Strombecker and Monogram Speedibuilt. Lots of fun but I sure am dating myself :D Nice job so far on the BirdDog, Willie.
Later,
Fred Z.

It can certainly be a frustrating business, but the most important thing when covering with tissue and doping is to prepare the framework properly beforehand. This means sanding and applying sanding sealer as many times as necessary until it's smoooooth! I would also recommend ditching the kit supplied tissue and getting yourself some Esaki/Japanese tissue instead. This has a much greater wet strength and will help to get rid of as many wrinkles as possible before you shrink it and then apply the dope.

Sorry lep, I'd forgotten you'd asked this. As far as I'm aware there's nowhere in the UK called Awe, other than Loch Awe in Scotland. My comment echos something I saw posted on another forum, it tickled me and I thought it might make you all smile too .

How's that SE5a coming along, Chris? I get a case of the modeling doldrums every now and then - it usually follows a period of frenzied (for me), modeling activity. When I'm not really interested in modeling, I tend to make simple mistakes when I make the attempt. I've got to be in the mood. Since you're doing a WWI bird next, perhaps viewing an inspirational film like Fly Boys or The Blue Max will get your fingers twitchin'.

To be honest Don, I haven't got much done on the SE5a at all. I got sidetracked pretty early on with trying to salvage another one of the models that went wrong. That one's almost finished now, thankfully, so pictures should be forthcoming sometime soon.

I know exactly what you mean, especially about being in the mood. I do get frustrated when things don't go according to plan though, or even worse when a model just just doesn't fit together properly . I guess I'm just too much of a perfectionist!

P.S. I've don't think I've ever seen Fly Boys, but The Blue Max is a good film.

Here's a link to the Flyboys trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jiw27pXIXRA I'm sure you can get it in the UK. It'll be sure to get you in the mood to start that SE5a
