I'm not sure if this is the correct place to make this comment, but here goes.

In the text that accompanies the X-15 model page there is some conflicting information about the final disposition of the three actual aircraft. In one spot there is a comment to the effect that X-15-3 still exists and that one of the contributors regularly drives past it in front of the NASA building at Edwards AFB.

I took that statement as a real compliment, as the Edwards display is nothing more than a full size mockup, built by several people (including myself) in the early 1990's. The mockup was originally fabricated by a company that built movie props. It looked pretty good as long as you were a couple hundred feet away and just got a quick glimpse. I was contracted after delivery to make it look more realistic as well as to build internal structure so it could be mounted on a pole for display. While we were at it, we installed launch hooks so it could be mounted on the B-52 carrier plane for a composite display. The engineering and planning for the upgrade was done by myself and then the actual fabrication work was done by George Nichols and myself. Both of us were retired NASA employees who had worked on the X-15 program.

The actual X-15-3 aircraft really did crash and all that remain are a few pieces. In spite of an intensive search, one of the wings never was found. Forty-five years later that wing panel still hasn't turned up. It's probably in some souvenir hunter's garage by now.
