First a little about me since I am new to the forum: I have been a digital artist in the off season (I am a flyfishing guide otherwise) for about 12 years now. Designing, modeling and rendering 3D models and prints as well as creating aircraft for flight simulator software.
I found FG years ago and had always intended to repaint some of the models for my own pleasure to clean up the black lines, graphics and compression artifacts. Recently I got to it and decided to logically start with the good old J-3. Three days later I found myself redrawing 99% of the model entirely. The result is a model more intended for the intermediate builder as I have eliminated all of the fuselage score lines and replaced them with highlights and all of the border lines have been redrawn at one pixel for easier vanishing or tabless building. While this is mostly a whole new redraw I have kept the classic coloration scheme out of respect for the artistic integrity, besides I always loved the sort of "cartoony" feel to some of the models.
I have added a great deal of additional detail that requires the model to be printed out at MAXIMUM resolution to enjoy. I have also added intake shrouds and exhaust pipes to the sheet.
I will be sending in the files to the "home office" shortly for review and perhaps it will be posted for all to enjoy.
I am currently knee deep in the Bonanza, 172,152 and the Jenny and may have some of them also completed shortly.
Best regards to all,
Matt

Thanks for the kind words folks,

I don't think Chip likes it because it does not fit with the FG look or format, lines being too thin and all but he may post it after changing my art, I don't know.

He really didn't like the preview of the Bonanza I sent either but I'll post a shot here in the forum when the art is done and I get the test model put together, if for no other reason than to hopefully inspire others to break out the graphics apps and give the older models a second life for their personal use, even if FG doesn't approve.

In defense of Chip and FG, maybe something offered doesn't "fit" with the FG "mold", but that definitely doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile effort.

Most definitely it is an excellent rendition of a good model.

There are times when I have suggested a thing or two, and Chip has shared why one or the other doesn't "fit" the FG "modus operandi" or (for most of my brilliant ideas and observations) it's a "been there, done that, and it don't work.." hehe.

Do not stop your work. In any case, Flight Simulator can always use a better <insert plane here>!

No need to defend Chip Felix, he is not under attack. I've worked with several of the largest publishers of simulation software for many many years as a modeler, artist and technical adviser so I am very aware of the modus operandi method of maintaing technical standards in a commercial and publishing framework. Believe me I gave up being offended when someone rejects your work a long time ago.

I get paid the big bucks to teach people how to flyfish so since about 4 years ago eveything else is done as a "side" and half of it never sees the light of day because I do it for myself alone. No accolades, no stirring up the sycophants to boost my own ego, or just plain showing off, none of that. That includes the 15 or 20 or so complete redesigns and repaints of various paper models. I do it for something to hang from my ceiling and if someone else can benefit from what I do than I am always the first to offer, if they don't want it so be it. No skin off my rear, I have the model I did in front of m; the original target audience for which it was created.
Yeah I know the "been there done that" response, I watched it crash and burn 2 big publishers who refused to listen to new ideas and evolve with the times and tools available. NOT SAYING THAT IS THE CASE WITH FG :) Before anyone jumps on me about that statement, it's just an idea it brought to mind when you said that.

So suffice it to say nothing "stops my work" short of a power outage and lack of cardstock...as for flight simulation always needing another whatever..are you trying to encourage me to stay out of paper and keep my work focused elsewhere?

Would *I* dare suggest soimething like that? I mean, just because I'm caretaker of the Freeflight Design Shop site and forum "flight simulator design resources*, and moderate the design forums at Simviation.com and flightsim.com, doesn't mean anything at all.

:)

(just don't say that you deal with 3DSMax, because I'm still strugglilng with gmax...!)

Yep I remember you fondly Felix, you still have a couple of my caveman era models on your sites, before I left the public side of Fsim. Long time no see :)

Sorry,... yep it's 3DS Max and Lightwave now, with a little DeepPaint 3D for skinning with the beta Lightning rendering engine for acurate visualization, course the last work I've been doing is for a sim a little past the latest MSFsim, it's a industry training sim ....EVOLVE OR DIE! But I'm pretty much all done with 3D birds for awhile..burn out for the 5th time and all :)
Best to ya Felix

dryfly, you have an unusual background as many on this site have. It is interesting how folks from different backgrounds end up folding paper. I painted watercolor birds (feathered) for 25 years, other graphic artists and overall aviation buffs like to hold a plane in their hands, turn it around just to enjoy the inherent beauty of flying design
