here's a peek at what I've been working on

This is pretty much done, but only in B+W to work out details, could work on details forever, sometimes you just have to call it

Well, Ive built about 20 of these, so hopefully everything already fits(?), will be sending to Chip for general release when we can finish the instructions and so on, I don't think very long to do those, though

Thanks, a pic may be helpful, what year is yours? I'm always looking for color schemes, since I hope to make a couple shortly

Gimme a few days, and I'll see if I can find any links on the racing Staggerwings of the '30s.

If Chip buys the design, this couuld plug a lot of the holes in the '30s Racers series...

There is alot of cool stuff on this aircraft, even has its own museum! but I think Chip is planning on this one, it's just a matter of finishing and polishing up the details

Also, if I come up with a list of several production versions, think you could tell us how to tell 'em from a D17?

C17R, NC15835: Louise Thaden, 1st place '36 Bendix
D17W, NX/NR18562: Jackie Cochran, 3rd place '37 Bendix
D17S, registry unknown: Max Constant, 4th place '38 Bendix
D17 (R #NC18776?): Ross Hadley, 5th place '38 Bendix
D17W, (NR18562 or NC17081?): Max Constant, 4th place '39 Bendix

Revised on Thaden, Hadley and Constant '39 8/29 PM.

That is good stuff...The Beech Heritage museum online technical library is what you want, but in a nutshell the Staggerwings D-F are similar in outward appearance. Earlier models had shorter fuse and first ones had non-retractable gear. Later G models are visably more streamlined. The suffix, though, refers to powerplant, so D17 could be S-Pratt+Whitney Wasp W-Wright cyclone(the most common two versions) Most, were converted to P+W
power due to availability, reliablility, so are D17S and I was trying to model a 1941 D17S. Really, no outward differences from other D, although the lack of support for the stab, AND landing gear doors with open area is easy way to recognize a D.

Actually, there were only two D17W's, the type had a Restricted certificate. I've edited what I've been able to refine into my prior post.

Thank you, Rob that is a nice example, not much flair in the navy color scheme, but it shows details well. The one we have had up here is a similar year 1941 and is red with dark red striping, chrome spinner. It has been sold, but I'm running out of energy to make design changes at this stage, you know, unless you spot something serious...

I took a handfu of pictures, mostly of the markings, if you want them. The Armed Forces weren't really into bright, colorful paint schemes by the war years.....but the aluminum doped fabric does look nice...if somewhat plain. I'll forward the pix to you if you're interested.
