There's some argument as to whether this WIG Soviet ekranoplan even qualifies as an aircraft, since it's designed to never leave ground effect, but I say if it clears the deck and stays aloft it's definitely an AIRcraft of some sort. In any event, it's unlikely anything uglier has ever been conceived of, let alone built and operated!

The ekranoplan is one of my favorite weird/ugly aircraft. This thing was sometimes referred to as the Caspian Sea Monster. I think monster is a pretty accurate description. There is another Russian ekranoplan that is even uglier, I will see if I can find a picture of it.

The last one at least looks like it could maybe leave the ground in some manner. Plus, the lines of it are nice. Kind of live a blistery B-29 or something. That first one just screams "Ow, my retinas are burning!"

I like them. They have a sci-fi look to them. The Russians and the Germans always had the coolest ideas for aircraft, always pushing the envelope.

I agree with you 100% Niki. The U.S. only seems to get inspired when pushed by others.
