It's the pill all those old Soviet hard liners had to swallow when the USSR went bust.

So here's a question for aerodynamicists: the half dome nose (as on this flying barrel) I've heard induces the least drag (which is why it's probably on this behemoth) - so when does it make sense to sharpen the nose, if ever, on subsonic aircraft (and there're plenty with sharp noses that could be half domes without sacrificing crew or equipment accommodation)?

I would think that only more transonic or high subsonic aircraft would need a more pointed nose. Thats something I've looked at while at the Air museum here. Maybe the thought is that there's no sense putting more material and weight on an airplane to extend the nose if it isn't necessary.

bear in mind, that ugly-as-sin beastie was converted from a high-subsonic bomber--can't recall if it's a Tu-16 Badger or an M-52 Bounder, but it's one of those two before they chopped and redesigned the tailgroup.

The Atlant was based off of the 3M series of Bison (normally the M4) tankers
