We've got kicking around here an Ugly thread and a Weird thread, but it's high time we posted a list of the best looking airplanes of all time. Here're a few on my list (in no particular order):

Republic XR-12 Rainbow

Lockheed short fuselage 749 Connie with the sharp radome nose (and original 11 pane windscreen)

P-51D (that raked bubble canopy is the icing on an already impeccable airframe)

The Beech long fuselage Staggerwings (D, E, F, G 17s)

Concorde

And, finally, we can't neglect the Junkers Ju87 Stuka - those sexy wheel spats!! (OK, just kidding - checking to see if you're awake 8) )

What's on your lists? We're not talking merely good looks here, but knockout gorgeous design.

Being a war bird guy, I've always been a fan of the lines of the SR-71 and the B-1. So long and smooth. You just want to stare all day.

Oh yeah, the SR-71 is the tops in my book.

I'll get back to you on the rest...

I'd say the Fiat G.55 Centauro & the Reggiane Re. 2005 Sagittario are on th' top o' my list. (the G.55 might even surpass the P-51!)

Some how I neglected to put my absolute favorite plane of all time. The B-17. Particularly the E-G models. While she's not the cleanest bird, something about that classic silhouette just grabs me.

I have a created a category relevant to this specific thread. Pending better suggestions, it is called "Fantastic Aircraft". Any alternative names are welcome.

I left the Supermarine Spitfire off my original list since I didn't want to hog all the good calls, but as it has not been mentioned yet (!!!) let's not forget Reginald Mitchell's inspired and elegant design. The later marks with the bubble canopies I think were the best looking of all of them.

There's a homebuilt from the 1970s based on the bubble canopy Spitfire its builder called the Prowler that is also in my top tier of great looking aircraft - I'll have to "prowl" Google to see what became of that airplane and if anyone else bought plans and built one.

Funny how no one's mentioned racers yet either - you'd think things designed for nothing else but to go fast as hell would be natural sleek forms of beauty, but at the moment I can't think of any really beautiful racers - with one exception now - Hughes H1 - that was a great looking airplane.
