Seriously. Yeah, the TBD was a POS in combat that was almost hunted to extinction at Midway, but it's the last of the major WWII USN carrier-birds we're missing. (Well, aside from the even-more-obsolete-than-the Vindicator SBC biplane Helldivers that Hornet originally sailed out of the yard with...)

Anyone else interested in this puppy, or in seeing some mods to refit "folding" wings onto more of the existing birds where applicable? (I'm not gonna lie, I have a bit of an angle: I'm trying to educate some characters about carrier airgroups and I need a way to show them that 100 Wildcats and 100 Avengers or Helldivers would take hugely different amounts of deck- and hangar-space...)

Yeah, been pinned down for about a year with a NavAir research project Rob pitched in an assist with bird-doggin' sources on. Now that it's winding down, if I can get my hands to quit shaking I might have a little building time soon, if I can get stuff rearranged to a constant scale.

As for fossilized, there are days when I feel like it... last time we had a major storm blow in, it caused so much knee trouble one of the librarians I work with even gave up her coffee-break to help me limp out to catch a bus. (Sigh... too bad she's married and has a kid my age...lol)

I'd go for some more navy planes with folding wings. Heck, I'd go for some redesigns of almost any model, but the folding wings would be good.

Just don't try folding the wings on the SBD (like the suggestion in the instructions) SBD wings don't fold! They're held on by 104, 1/4 inch dia bolts at each wing stub, plus one big 1/2 inch bolt. LIke it's descendant--the A-4 Skyhawk, it was relatively small.

The TBD was a dog when WW2 started--it was already obsolete. But, the TBF wouldn't have faired much better. The problem was the tactic itself, plus the fact that the Navy's arial torpedo was nearly a criminally deficient device. The Navy abandoned torpedo attacks in favor of level bombing.
