Fiddlers Green

Is it just me, or does the Panzer III model look, well, hokey? The colour seems way off (the Germans never used blue-gray. If anything, they tended towards more of a gray-green). The gun barrel seems too thick, and the "details" really seem flat and lifeless.

And why is there a picture of a Soviet KV-2 tank on page two??? The rest I will chalk up to trying to keep the model simple. After all, tanks tend to have tons of junk hanging off them, and nobody (well nobody around here) wants to cut out 1,000 parts. But common now! A KV-2 has nothing to do with a Pzr III. To say that a German chassis was used for a Soviet assault gun is just absurd.

I assume its simply bad research.

you're right. it does seem kind-of life-less but downsize it (I.E. 1/60th scale) and i think that it will do perfectly!

The panzer is included free with the Gigant model, as it is meant for display. It is designed to be easy to build (FG norm), it is a bit plain but looks cool nonetheless. I'll try and do a camo scheme asap.

Its the wargame-hobbiest in me: I like planes but dont know much about whats right or wrong with a model of them. But Tanks I know!

I was sufficiantly inspired myself to attempt my own re-paint of the Pzr III- the very first I've tried.

Unfortunatly, all I did was open up the pdfs in photoshop to start working on them. I didnt think about how this might or might not affect the page scaling until after I had finished saving them back as pdfs. I'm going to try printing out what I have tonight, and if I've messed up the scaling then I guess its back to square one (right after I re-read Robs most excellent article on repainting- something I should have started with, not ended with!)

I built the tank and had fun with it, but I don't know anything about them. Looks cool to me! More versions would be fun I would think

I built my own version last night. You can see pics of it over in the Look What I built forum. Let me know what you think!

It seems to me that changing the overall color with Photoshop isn't a really big deal, so start by repainting.

After the tank is assembled, reprint the kit on the heaviest card stock available and cut out all the hatches, riveted on panels, tools, etc. Use your markers to do all the edges and to add appropriate color to the stuff that is strapped on, and glue them all in place. That simple touch of depth will really "pick things up".

Even though I build aircraft almost exclusively, I'm going to try this one myself, if I can figure out how to improve the treads [I'm not about to try to cut out each individual link and reassemble them, but an armor "purist" probably would!].

Did my second version of the PzrIII last night. I did all of the above, plus added on a few extras, mostly gleaned from the Opel Blitz model. You can check out the final outcome in the "look what I built" forum.

And let me know what you think, please; I need validation!

as the war progressed, the Germans abandoned the "panzer grey" in favor of a dark yellowish tan, which lent itself easier to camoflauge, camoflauge was achieved a number of different ways, usually by overspraying dark green or red (or white. for winter use) over the dark yellow . by 1943, few if any German tanks were still using "Panzer grey".

also, a Sturmgeschutz III would be an appropriate model for the Gigant, perhaps even more so than the Panzer. It's turretless design and low sillhouette made it easier to fit inside the transport glider.

Interesting video Tahutihotep. I found the Luftwaffe propoganda video in the link even more interesting than the Panzer video. The color Luftwaffe video even has a good photo of the Gigant.
