That looks similar to the Pinocchio that Rick Thomson was talking about a loooong time ago. The long nose is from an F-104 and meant to teach pilots to use the radar for navigation. This one has turbo props. The Pinocchio didn't.

The DC-3/C-47 was itself the subject of several intersting "variations".


Towards the end of WW2, Japan was developing a variant (yes, the DC-3 was built under license in WW2 Japan) with a wider body to allow for more cargo area.


There were, of course, the early (ca 1953) "Dart" conversions (BEA Pioneer) in the UK.

THere was even a tri-turboprop conversion used for some time in Alaska (no further conversions because the exhaust from the nose mounted engine tended to leak into the cockpit....)

Then there's the turreted Li-2P (Lisunov Li-2) paratroop/bomber ...

A most interesting plane - and by the way, an engineless C-47 (engine nacelles faired over) - was tested as a potential troop/cargo glider, with excellent results!

Don't forget the DC - 2-1/2! During WWII a CNAC DC-3 suffered wing damage so severe the wing panel could not be salvaged, and the only available possible replacement was a DC-2 outer wing panel, several feet shorter in span than a DC-3/C-47 panel. So the DC-2 panel was fastened to the belly of a C-47, the root faired over, and flown to the CNAC DC-3, where it was fitted and the repaired airplane flew beautifully! Hence, the DC - 2-1/2!

Now that you mention it, and I'll have to look up the reference, but there was REALLY a DC-2.5!

I *believe* that the C-39<?> was made up of the fuselage of the DC-2 with wings/tail of a DC-3 ... Just a few were built like that.

My favourite conversion of a DC-3/C-47, the SAAF C-47TP (turboprop). Twin turboprops, lengthened fuselage, amazing sight to see, quiet as well.

Yes, I still want to. Problem is I can't get the normal one built... I might just design the basic shapes and let someone else do the test builds, hmmm... interesting.

Long time ago indeed.

I've got the repaint of FG's Dak in CAF colours about 90 percent done, but it as well as pretty much all other card model projects have been stuck in limbo for a while now.
