Duh!

The Wright Flyer.

Single engine, twin props driven by bicycle chains, catapulted into the air by a falling weight, the pilot prone on a "sled" that slid side to side to warp the wings for turns.

Clever!!

Yes, Martin 404 is correct (so the next turn is yours).

The competitor is not the DC-3; both the 404 and the competitor were built to REPLACE (with mixed success) the DC-3.

I'll leave the competitor open since now that the 404 has been identified someone will ID its competitor almost immediately.

Interesting Sinatra trivia regarding his 404 - he had the front of the left cowling painted to resemble an 18 pocket roulette wheel, and one of the propellor blades painted red, then would take bets with his passengers where that red painted blade would stop when the engines were shut down (the R2800 engines had 18 cylinders so the blade would stop up against the compression stroke of one of the 18 ). The wet bar he'd installed took up a good deal of the cabin and was outfitted with outlandish lights. Watch the movie "The Manchurian Candidate" for a good look at Frank's bar aboard that 404 - Frank leased his airplane to the movie and made some extra money on top of his salary as its star.

Not quite - the YS-11 first flew in 1962; the Martin and its competitor shared simultaneous development in the late 40s. The competitor is also US mfr.
