Probably a little late but here's what a Skytrain tailcone is supposed to look like - the actual cone itself removed and a towhook fitted.

That bit of fairing just beneath the rudder should not be glued together but filled with a small triangular face, and the bit of belly that sticks out beyond that fairing should be cut off and a half round small bulkhead put in that joins the triangular fill piece.

A Douglas engineer was a 2nd cousin to an engineer at Heinkel during WWII and got clandestine development details of the He-111Z in return for access to a San Diego timeshare apartment, and got a similar project started at the Douglas plant.

Douglas only built about 16 of these before scrapping the program when it became clear that there was no way build an enlarged Waco to be towed by this behemoth without putting lift enhancing helium gas envelopes in the larger Wacos, which in occupying troop payload space meant the larger Waco couldn't even carry the payload of a standard Waco.

Only 1 of the 16 might still survive, at last sighting in 1957 being used minus its wings and engines as a low rent apartment structure in Uliastay, Mongolia.

Wouldn't take much to modify the FG Skytrain into one of these; it'd make a hell of a model, dontcha think? 8)

I'm looking at it in a scavenging mind set. The tail could maybe be done by enlarging the P-82 tail piece, but not sure. Maybe the middle wing could be done by stretching the actual piece from the kit. Hmmmm. Alas, my free week is already filled with builds and repaints.

You are aware that the "quad tug" is total BS - a product of an idle imagination and a few hours in Photoshop.

But I still think it'd make a very conversation provoking model, especially for those familiar with the Gooney Bird's history, who would wonder what they'd missed!

The only mods necessary would be plotting a rectangle for the stabilizer, and attaching the left & right elevators to another rectangle; making a mirror fuselage with the cargo door on the right side, and creating a stretched wing center section. Not that much. Well, also removing inboard fuselage insignia, if built as a D-Day tug. And some new nose art, of course, "The Twin Twin", "The Siamese Douglas", "Four Forty Seven", "Four For Three", etc. etc.

Even for total BS, it looks plausible, a cool "what if" model.

Possm,
If you can get your hands on an old sheetmetal shop book. I got one and it really helped me bend paper. The two substances form almost the same, curve radius restrictions and all.

Something that is absolutely funny is that many years ago, when Chip ran the wierd planes contest, I actually started designing and building that beast, the Twin Gooney. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and interest, so never finished it, and the files got lost.
