Anyone doing this? What's the best glue? How do you strip the printing?

I saw someone doing this once. I think they just used the inside of the can. They flattened it using roller of some sort (after cutting the top and bottom off). Then they traced the paper pattern onto the metal. They used tin snips to cut the pieces out. But, for the life of me I can't remember how he put it together. Solder maybe?

Well, a few years ago, I tried to get into soda can modelling (even bought the book offered somewhere on the FG site), and they recommended cutting the top and bottom off, flattening the sidewall, and using brake cleaner fluid to strip off the paint.

They didn't recommend using the inside, because it has a rubbery/wax coating to separate the corrosive soda from the corrodable aluminum that is very hard to remove, and gave the model a dull finish.

They also recommended using superglue to glue everything together, and it worked ok, if you clamped it overnight.

Why did I quit? You think a paper cut is bad? Not to mention all the caustic amd smelly chemicals kinda upset my coworkers. They much preferred paper and tacky glue.

It's a good book, if you can find it. don't know if it's still in print. My feelings were the same as Murphy's about the process. It' s not for everyone....and it's a lot more difficult. That alloy was never meant to be formed into tight curves. One of these days I'm going to build an oversized model using scrap aluminum leftovers from the museum---maybe using .025 3003 alloy--it works pretty easily.

and "oversized" model using leftover parts from a aircraft museum...

Rob; its not a "scale model" if the scale is 1-1!

Kool idea though. I only wish I had the skills to do it myself.

I use Testors Super Glue which I purchase in quantities of 6-12 from my local hobby shop for about $2.25 for each 1/5 fluid oz bottle.

I have found that painting over the can with Tamiya or Testors Spray paint works best rather than stripping the paint off of the can for many obvious reasons. In many cases, I simply either snip off the part of the can with the ingredients and use the remainder of the can, or I layer can strips without any print on them to achieve the desired effect.

Cuts are a frequent hazzard as is getting accidentally glued to your fuselage, but the final results can be spectacular to say the least:

Those are sweet! Where did you find the pattern for the AN-225? I've always wanted a model of that one since I saw it land here in town.

The pattern for the Antonov 225 was actually a scratch conversion from an AN-124 pattern that I found on the web. The An-225 is longer, chubbier in the fuselage and also has 6 engines. I made these modifications to the pattern and I was then able to enlarge it to 1/72 scale using my pdf editing software so that the finished model was just over 48 inches long with a 52 inch wingspan!

I think this is one of the links that I found the AN-124 on:

http://www.jt-museum.narod.ru/air.htm

Its all in Russian and the files are all .jpg files that have to be downloaded one at a time. I have them converted into pdf files if you rather have those....

Thank you sir!

Here are some more of my creations. Some ofthese use the layering technique so that no painting or paint removal is required:

FG Mig-15 pattern modified to the Stoli Mig

And finally, the largest model I have built to date, the FG DC-9 pattern modified to an MD-80 and built at 1/18th scale. Length is 8 foot and wingspan is just over 6 foot!
