I second Rob on the instructions bit. Most of the time when I'm building a model I tend to use 3-view diagrams or even photos of the actual object to build it. As for sub assemblies, why exclude them? If possible, supply them as "optional", it's a compromise but it caters for both the casual and more serious builder.

I agree that experienced modelers rarely follow instructions to the letter, but I've got well over 10,000 PMI models of various WWII types to unload & I gave a few to friends who showed nascent interest & when I started to build one I cringed at what I kept encountering in the instructions, visualizing my friends encountering the same things and giving up. I have a financial interest now in enlarging the general interest in these things and the more accessible I make the hobby the better off I'll be.

Anyway, I would still benefit, even now, as a very experienced builder, from the designer putting some thought into the instructions and spelling out just how certain pieces should be shaped, rather than leaving me to fight it out on my own, screw up & have to reprint things to get it right. And pre-printed models don't have the option of reprinting.

Just because we kit bash and modify is no excuse to be careless in writing the instructions.

I tend to agree with Lep. It really depends on the model. Since most models I do are FG I usually cut out the whole thing then assemble the fuselage and wings, unless there is detail that obviously needs to go on before. However on a model like the JU-52 I tend to follow the build instructions more or less  Generally speaking if it have more than two pages I follow the instructions, maybe
