Our wing had a "Christmas Door Decoration competition" this year. One of our engineers is a sucker for these things so he threw together the plan shown here.

Since we support the BUFF, he reasoned the best thing we could do is "bomb" our building with Christmas cheer (and the occasional contractor).

The theme:

"Minot will let you load anything on a B-52 . . ."

(man, I hope our friends up north still have their sense of humor  )

Anyway, they'd arranged for all but the platform. That's when I suggested the B-52 from here. I showed them this site -- shock and awe. :o :D

Unfortunately, I had to slap together a modded model over a weekend. It's a bit rough around the edges, but it's close to an H model (engines are still wrong, but the tail is close and most of the radomes and antennas are right).

Slapped together, but a load of fun. Thought yall'd enjoy it to!

Not sure the Google albums work on firefox, but it does in IE.

Happy new year!

I love it!!!!!!!! Where did you get the radomes? Did you do them yourself? That would be super neat in the model files.

Thanks Willy!

There are a lot of engineers in our building and the B-52 generates a lot of interest. We already had a couple of "rivet counters" comment on our building's model before I put the plane together -- the details need to be close. In the end the nitpick we got was "you folks have too much time on your hands."

I can live with that.

Yup, the radomes are hand cut.

The "teeth" set wasn't so hard -- got it done on the first guess and trimmed a second to match. The "whiskers" on the side took a half dozen attempts to get it right -- it's got that curve it has to match. The bump on the nose is just a small box cut diagonally (then sharpied to match).

The top two radomes on the tail gun were made from white duplicates of the gun cone that were rolled tighter (by one of the serrations). the base part for tail was a regular gun cone folded in a semi-cone instead of a cone, then blunted. It's not exactly right, but it's close.

There are a couple more tail radomes on the side that I missed -- ran out of time. Would have rather built bigger cowlings for the turbofans, but I never got to that either.

I think I still have the sheet I cut the teeth and wiskers from. If I hunt them down, I'll draw a pattern and scan it.

You really did a lot of extra work. And yes, that would be awesome if you could get those parts scanned. :D

Howzit

The 'H' model of the B-52 is awesome. One of many model mods I have running through my head is a conversion of B-52, very cool.

Gives the phrase "Christmas bombing" a whole new meaning...

Nicely done, sir! I've been looking at converting the FG BUFF since it was first released, but my design/modding skills are sorely lacking...

(Even worse, since I'll have to do some entirely new design, as I was planning Dale Brown's "Old Dog", and then from there an even-more-radically-enhanced version that would make even Brown's most advanced refinement of his original look like a WWII B-17 by comparison...)
