For 20 years I lived in a little village in Essex called Littlebury. It doesn't have much claim to fame but once it was home to Mr Henry Winstanley, maker of eccentric mechanical devices and amusements. His house had chairs that went down in the cellar when you sat down; that kind of thing.

One day the King asked Henry to build a light house, as you do if you are king of England. So Henry did.

That was in about 1798. It was a huge success until one day in 1704 when the greatest storm for a 100 years came along and washed it away. Henry happened to be visiting his light house at the time, so met an unfortunate end.

It was an eccentric affair but the first off-shore light house and is so of great historical importance. It set the way for all the sea lights that followed.

Great story. Be careful what you wish for.
