MP and Pump shop on the USS Prairie, A-gang the USS Texas, and no, I was not a nuke. Thank God for that... I would have hated the politics.

Nukes lived in their own world--challenging--but too many rules. Guess I never noticed the nuke politics at the Training Center--I mostly hung out with A-gangers--they seemed a lot more relaxed. Nuclear power training is one of those things where there's only one way--never to be varied, experimented or otherwise modified. Guesss that's why the Navy's safety record is so good. When I was on the Nimitz--us flight deck types were exposed to more radiation (from the sun) than the guys in the reactor rooms.

for anyone thinking of joining--it's still a primo career field to get into....especially if you're a math and science lover.

I have 2 buddies that went into the Nuke program right after high school. One got out last summer and is now working at a nuke power plant here in Nebraska. The other taught in the New York training center after he just graduated from there. Now I think he is finishing officer training in Illinois.

I'm reminded of an old bumper sticker (from the U of Texas book store, digging the Texas A&M Aggies):

"Before I came here I couldn't even spell engineer,
And now I are one.
TAMU"

How many Nukes does it take to change a light bulb?

four

a third-class to do the work

a second-class to read the manual

a first-class to take the credit

and a chief to write them all up for an improper tag-out

PS..I'm not kidding about any of this.

We'll have to drop this topic--I'm starting to miss the navy, again, just thinking about tag-outs, paperwork, shipboard 3m and the rest of the stuff that used to get in the way of getting the job done..
