Was this an experimental space-saving practice on WWII Navy carriers?

It looks like a P-47 to me. Maybe they were taking the "flying milk jug" thing too seriously and decided to make it sit like one.

Nah, it's an F4U Corsair, or in light of that picture, an F4U "Curse"air

I think you're right Murphy. I was thinking P-47 by the size of the cowling and placement of the canopy. I had to look another time at it to see the shadow of the gull wing bend. Plus, I should have seen th carrier flight deck in the background.

So can a C-130. I hear it even took off again. Although they don't mention what it took off. :D

Probably no cargo and a crapload o' JATO's pushing it up.

OTOH, you can launch a U-2 off a flattop...

I think with enough steam pressure, you can launch anything off a flattop.

But a U-2's tricky, 'cause a cat-shot'd tear it apart...

That skin ain't much thicker'n Reynolds Wrap, y'know--on the line, one guy accidentally tapped one with his toolbox and put a 4" dent in that skin panel, according to Ben Rich...

That's why I like the SR-71. Did the same job, but flashier. And isn't a glider with a jet engine in it.

Yeah, but you can't turn an SR into a subhunter--a U-2 would make a really-good maritime surveillance aircraft... turn those pods into Harpoon missile bays...

Back to the "you can launch anything off a carrier if you've got enough steam" bit, I wonder how often this happens
