Hey, nedry (and all),

I loved the Airacobra as a kid --- I think it was in one of the comic books then. Its still one of my all time favorites. How about two 37.5mm cannons on a twin-engined fighter and two .50 caliber gunners to cover your tail? This was in the days when fighters had four .30 cal guns. And pusher props have class!

Bob

Blueeyedbear, I was thinking that when I go into a fight, I like to go alone, so I'd rather have extra firepower in fixed forward- and aft-facing "batteries": get in front of me, you die; tailgate me, you die. (I'm a big fan of one-trigger-pull, squeeze-and-release kills --then again, I'm a REAL big fan of heavy weapons on aircraft: did I mention that I designed an aircraft to pack a pair of big 16"/50s like the Missouri's once?)

The 'Cuda just needed new engines--pair of Merlins redesigned like P-38 Allisons, and modded to accommodate a 20mm through the prop-hub like the Daimlers on the Bf109?

Wow Nedry, you do like the heavy weapons. I think it woul dhave been pretty cool if it had the rear facing guns too.

Yeah, I do--the catch is that battleship-gun-packin' monster woulda been 400' long, powered by the engines of 8 777 airliners.
This is it, with a B-52 for scale in a Google SketchUp rendering.

Nedry, you are not well my friend, that thing is a beast. Stuff aircraft carriers, one of those and even N. Korea will c*** themselves.

I think it'd be very bad, I generally haven't let anyone see the sketches except the fighter-pilot who worked with me on designing it 'cause I'm actually AFRAID of the monster I've created! The Colonel thinks this monster could fight both Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom with one plane, one crewman, one sortie. More raw power than one man can be trusted with, I believe...

Would you believe it originally started out at 200' and 4 engines? The concept was to be able to deploy a commando team anywhere in the world fast, and have the air-support and dropship in one package, and it just kinda grew in response to "mission creep"...

And Niki, striking fear into even Mad Li'l Kim was the design goal. lol

Oh, and the catch: at least a million bucks in fuel turned into smoke and noise every flight, even more if you try to take it up out of ground-effect. (Think a very big, very fast combat ekranoplan here...)

You haven't shown it to anybody connected to the government have you. That beastie could explain a few of the UFO sightings around here.

Actually, Murph, the answer is that the US Government's among the LAST people I want to know about this thing. And when I designed it, I was capitalizing on the wave of black-triangle sightings, figuring that any sighting would be dismissed as "just more of those UFO freaks" by the authorities.

The closest to any "official" connection I will let this beast go is the retired interceptor-squadron commander who helped me fine-tune the design. Like I said, I'M terrified of what I've created!

WOW! Great pics. It looks like Mr. Sikorsky was very busy in the early days of his company. Kinda strange how he went from primarily flying boats to helos isn't it?

Nah, his passion was always helicopters, he played with helicopters for a few years, but gave up made airplanes to make money, then went back to helicopters after he figured out what he needed to make helicopters work.

We did enough research on him for the VS-300, and Chip actually worked for Sikorsky Helicopters in an earlier life, so I feel I practically know Igor.
Eventually I want to do a whole line of Sikorsky choppers and planes, so Chip can put together a Sikorsky CD.
