OK,,, Here is my tribute to my Father on this aviation trick.
My Dad was a Naval aviator During WWII And Korea and after.
In 1949 he and two other flight instructors at Glenview NAS started
doing a trick they called The Worlds Smallest Aircraft Carrier.
Sometimes my Dad would fly the plane, and sometimes Richard Schram would fly it. (Richard Schram became famous for this trick)
When not flying the plane they hung outside the truck and acted as the Landing Signaling Officer guiding the aircraft to a landing on the truck.
Flying a Piper J-3 Cub they would do this trick at airshows.
They even did this trick a couple times at the opening celibrations of O'Hare field in Chicago. (see news articles)
So with Bob Martin's help I repainted a van model to look like the truck,,, adding some eliments from one
of the two original pictures I have of them doing this trick.
Waves,,,The Sign,,, USS Plymouth sign,,, Hand drew an anchor,,, added license plates from the embroydery on my fathers uniform they had made for this trick,,, and printed and cut out a paper image of my Dad acting as the LSO.
Also added a front with a gun like the original truck had,,, and guide posts too.
Built the J-3 Cub to size and,,, hope you enjoy the pictures.
They include the model,,, and a gimped version of it at the airstrip
where I live.
Also the two original pictures of them doing the trick.
And the newspaper article from the opening of O'Hare field in Chicago.
I want to thank Bob Martin for his help and encouragement on
this project. THANKS BOB :D
