Horten IX Flying Wing Like most of the Nazi aircraft built toward the end of the war, it was primarily made of plywood with a welded tubular steel frame. The retractable nose wheel was actually the TAIL wheel taken from a scrapped bomber.. The main landing gear was 'fixed' to create the aerodynamical drag of the missing engines.

Sadly, US soldiers burned the abandoned Ho-IX V1 when they advanced through Germany in 1945. But the twin jet powered V3 model (HO-229) was carefully crated and is stored at the Garber Facility of the Smithsonian while it waits to be rebuilt.
