Crofter's Cottage
Hey, what is a Croft anyway?? Each farmstead or house in the village would be located on a croft, which is a piece of land stretching back from the road to the boundary of the fields.
On this 'croft' were also farm buildings, orchards, gardens and cess pits. The backs of the crofts were sometimes linked by a lane or footpath.
This (easily built!) Crofter's Cottage can be visited at the Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton-le-Hole, Yorkshire, North England
